Oregon Law requires the Fire District to report the cause of all unwanted fires occurring within our jurisdiction to the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office. The District's Company Officers are trained in basic fire cause investigation procedures. For more complex fires, the District has trained several of its Career and Volunteer members in more advanced fire investigation techniques. These specially trained members form the District's Fire Investigation Team (FIT). These members also participate in the Columbia County Fire Investigation Team (CCFIT).
The CCFIT is comprised of members of the County's Fire Districts, Law Enforcement Agencies, Building and Electrical Code Officials and the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office. The CCFIT is used when the fire cause may be of a criminal origin or in complex fires.
For fires that require Federal involvement, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will coordinate with the CCFIT.
